Arturo and Alessandro have been a couple for more than fifteen years. Despite the feelings they still have for each other, their relationship is in crisis. When Alessandro’s best friend, Annamaria, unexpectedly asks them to take care of her two children for a few days, something changes in their daily routine and love will drive them to a crazy and unexpected turn in their life.
Note: Some of the scenes were films at the Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia, a sacred complex dedicated to the goddess of Fortune at the city of Praeneste, now Palestrina, near Rome.
Ferzan Ozpetek was born in Istanbul, Turkey; after attending university in Italy, he became a naturalized Italian citizen. In 1997, he made his directorial debut with the film Il bagno turco. He won the David di Donatello award for Best Film for La finestra di fronte and the Nastro d'argento award for Best Comedy for Mine vaganti.
Regarding his film, Ozpetek stated "mi capitò un fatto reale che è alla base di questo film. A year ago my brother was seriously ill. His wife asked me if, in the case that something happed to her, would my companion and I take care of the two children. She wanted me to promise her. My nephews, then twelve year olds, are intelligent children that speak other language, they learn, read and are curious, easy to take care of. Yet, this request opened a world of anguish, fear and doubt about my abilities; it opened the doors to a emotional world to which I did not know how to react. This film was a way to explore those doubts and those emotions."
