Il vizio della speranza
"An emotional hymn to life" - IL SOLE-24 ORE

Maria, with her hood up and a resolute step, lives day to day without dreams or desires, taking care of her mother and at the service of a bejeweled madam. She ferries pregnant women across the river, like a modern-day Charon.

But hope will pay Maria a visit, in its most ancestral and powerful form, as miraculous as life itself, teaching her that staying human is the greatest revolution of all.

Edoardo De Angelis, born in Napoli, graduated from the Centro Sperimen-tale di Cinematografia.  His directorial debut was in 2011 with Mozzarella Stories, followed  three years later with Perez. He won the Best Film award at the Venice Film Festival for Indivisibili.

De Angelis stated: After I made a film on separation (Indivisibili), I wanted to make a film on reconciliation. I thought about how everything seems dead in winter and we’d light up a fire to warm ourselves while we were awaiting the rebirth of nature. Pina and I dreamt about this and we saw this image of a baby being born and it starts with the primordial foundations of nature – water, land, fire and air — so this brought the desire to tell the story.
